Abstract

The State of Bihar is comprised of two broad soil groups, the alluvial soils of the plain region in the northern half and the sedentary red loam and mixed red and black soils of the plateau region in the southern half of the State. The alluvial soil group may further be divided into non-calcareous, calcareous Sone and Ganga alluvium sub-groups according to the nature, character and age of deposition of the parent alluvium and climate. A scheme of fertility management has been drawn up for these soils in respect of maintenance of organic matter and adequate crop fertilization practices for achieving increased sustained production, keeping in view the character, nature and nutrient status of the soils.
