The phosphorus fertility status and the fertilizer needs of eroded alluvial soils of Uttar Pradesh have been studied. It has been observed that these soils are very low in available phosphate. Fractionation of soil phosphorus has revealed that the eroded soils are poor in organic and calcium-bound phosphorus and have greater proportions of iron and aluminium-bound one. Intensive manuring and cropping on these soils after adopting mechanical soil conservation measures are capable of building up the level of available phosphorus. Field trials conducted have given a very high response to phosphate fertilization on eroded soils.
