Abstract

Soils of 25 districts in Madhya Pradesh were analysed for available (water soluble+exchangeable) and reducible manganese and pH. The lowest content of available Mn (1 ppm) was found in the Sehore district and the highest figure (170 ppm) in a village in Raipur. Raipur district had the maximum average value for available Mn (80 ppm) while the lowest average (4 ppm) was found in Ujjain. No clear relationship between soil type and manganese status has been noticed. Hoshangabad, in deep black zone, and Ujjain, Shajapur and Sehore districts, in medium black soil zone, had less than 6 ppm of available manganese. The negative correlation between pH and available Mn was found to be statistically significant.
