The infiltration of water into columns of air-dry Columbia silt loam was analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Soil water content profile distributions during infiltration were measured for water flowing horizontally, vertically downwards and vertically upwards. The water movement and soil water profiles were described by a diffusion-type equation.
