Abstract

Studies on three representative profile samples of the swamp soils of Kattampally area in Cannanore district of Kerala reveal that they are characterised by high acidity, electrical conductivity and plant nutrients, with high organic carbon in the middle layers. The texture of these soils ranged from loam to clay and fine fractions were alternating with coarse fractions. It is suggested that these soils are of an alluvial type very similar to the acid peat (Kari) soils of Travancore region in chemical properties.
