A study was made to evaluate the changes in physical, chemical and biological properties due to tillage implements in a clay loam soil of Jabalpur. Mechanical composition, volume expansion, true and apparent specific gravity, percentage of pore space, and Atterberg's constants remained unchanged while the water holding capacity, sticky point and rate of percolation have increased significantly. The percentage of aggregates less than 0.21 mm in diameter has decreased significantly. No significant changes in hydrochloric acid extract constituents of soil, total soluble salts, pH and cation exchange capacity have been observed. However, the organic matter and total nitrogen content have been reduced. The bacterial count and nitrifying capacity have increased while nitrogen fixing power has decreased.
