Attempts have been made to find out the swelling potential and compression index of some alluvial and black cotton soils of India by dye adsorption method. It is found that dye adsorption is related exponentially with swelling potential while with compression index there exists a linear relationship. The method is simpler and quicker than the existing standard methods and can advantageously be applied in the field or laboratory.
