The mineralogical study of the rock fragments and fine sands of the soils indicated that these soils are residual in character. Soils of Chunar and Madhian, the representatives of Upper Vindhyan system, seem to have developed on sedimentary rocks consisting of various types of sandstones, limestones, siliceous shales etc. and those of Robertsganj, the most fertile of the region, indicate their parentage to limestones and dolomitic limestones. But soils of Chopan and Dudhi, the representatives of the Lower Vindhyan system, indicate their parentage to widely varied types of metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks. The mineralogical composition of the fine sands indicates that quartz represents the major fraction of the fine sands in most of the soils.
