Abstract

Structures akin to pipes in appearance have been located in two sites in ferrallitic soil profiles of Midnapore District, West Bengal. These structures seem to have originated by progressive enlargement of small insect holes by the action of water rushing out in miniature spouts. Iron enrichment of the pipe rims is brought about jointly by fertilization and invasion of iron rich soil solution.
