Abstract

Nitrogen status of the soil as affected by various multiple cropping sequences for six consecutive seasons was studied. It was found that total nitrogen content of the cultivated layer of soil increased after potato, maize and groundnut and decreased after dalua and kharif rice. After completion of each crop cycle a decrease in total nitrogen was observed in all cropping patterns, the maximum loss being noticed in continuous cropping of rice, whereas the minimum loss was noticed in potato-rice-rice and groundnut-jute-rice cropping patterns.
