*Present address: All India Soil and Land Use Survey, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi.
Physiographic systems and elements of photo-interpretation were introduced in the technique of aerial photo-interpretation for a reconnaissance soil survey in a part of the Ganges Plain between Roorkee and Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.
A good correlation was found to exist between physiography and soils; soils could be mapped as sub-groups and associations of sub-groups.
The basic physiographic processes recognized were primarily alluvial and aeolian sedimentation and to a lesser extent erosion and tectonic movements.
The value of the following major photo-elements has been discussed in detail: land-type relief, slope, drainage system, drainage conditions, colour, parent material, land use and natural vegetation.
