The distribution of different fractions of sulphur has been studied in ten profiles representing broad soil groups of Rajasthan. In these soils total sulphur ranges from 250–450 ppm, organic sulphur from 90–230 ppm, sulphate sulphur ranges from 20–90 ppm and non-sulphate sulphur ranges from 50–160 ppm. These contents, in general decrease with depth. Coarse to medium textured soils (sierozems, recent alluvium, desert and non-calcic brown soils) located in low rainfall areas contain major part of sulphur in inorganic forms while medium to fine textured other soils located in comparatively high rainfall areas represent 60–70 per cent of total sulphur as organic. An attempt has also been made to relate these fractions with different forms of phosphorus.
