A study was initiated to describe the morphology and genesis of the different types of gravels met with in the laterite soil. The physico-chemical characteristics of these gravels reveal the existence of three significantly different types which can be described in the form of discriminant functional equations. The present study indicated that the ferruginous gravels are the final product formed by a coating of iron oxide either on the decomposing parent material, on the broken laterite stones or on quartz.
