The soils of Machkund catchment in Orissa State and Andhra Pradesh have been classified according to the Comprehensive System of Soil Classification as detailed in “Soil Taxonomy” (U.S.D.A. 1970) upto family level on the basis of their morphological and chemical characteristics. Out of the 9 soil series, 8 fall under ‘Alfisols’ and 1 under ‘Inceptisols’. At the subgroup level 2 fall in Ultic Haplustalf, 2 in Udic Haplustalf,1 in Aquic Haplustalf, 1 in Ultic Rhodustalf, 1 in Ultic Paleustalf, 1 in Typic Ochraqualf and 1 in Fluventic Dystric Ustochrept. At the family level 4 are clayey mixed hyperthermic, 3 are fine loamy mixed hyperthermic and 2 are loamy skeletal mixed hyperthermic.
