Abstract

The thermophysical properties of the fine textured Mollisols were selected for studying the influence of thermal conductivity and volumetric heat capacity at different moisture levels on damping depth, celerity of temperature change, thermal property and amplitude of surface temperature change. It was found that damping depth and celerity were increasing up to 60 to 70% of moisture saturation indicating that diurnal temperature wave do not penetrate below a depth of about 75 cm for any percentage of moisture in all the three soils considered. The thermal property was increasing with moisture implying that surface temperature amplitude decreased with increase in soil moisture. No appreciable difference in the thermal regime of the soils considered viz., Phoolbagh cloy loam, Beni silty clay loam and Haldi loam was observed.
