The distribution and nature of organic matter in fifteen surface soils collected from different climatic regions of West Bengal have been studied. It has been found that there is a regular difference in the nature, distribution and composition of humus. A moderate moisture regime, slightly acidic to neutral reaction and a fairly intense microbiological activity are the main factors for the formation of humic acids whileexcess moisture, acidic reaction and weak microbiological activity favour the formation of fulvic acids.
