A pot culture experiment was carried out to determine the critical Zn concentration in soils and plants for predicting response to its application. Performance of wheat plants raised on soils of varying Zn status with and without Zn amendment indicated that for alluvial (Gomti) soils of Lucknow district in central Uttar Pradesh, 0.53 ppm neutral N NH4OAc-dithizene extractable Zn represented critical value for avail, soil Zn and at the tillering stage 36 ppm tissue Zn in the middle leaves represented the critical concentration of Zn in wheat var. Kalyansona. In soils low in Zn status, its addition favoured the up$$ of soil P.
