Moistening the soil prior to transplantation is detrimental to the yield and nutrition of rice. Flooding for 15 days prior to transplantation does not produce any additional benefit over the air-dried condition so far the crop yield is concerned. Flooding the soil during the vegetative stage of growth is most important from the point of view of crop yield, whereas the same during the subsequent stages is not so critical.
