The nature and composition of humus in some soils of northern Karnataka were studied. The humus of the lateritic soil was fulvate type while in the forest and black soils it was humate-fulvate to humate type. The colloidally immobile fraction (Fr. II) was not present in the lateritic soil and the colloidally mobile fraction (Fr. I) was not present in the black soils. But both these fractions were present in the forest soils. Both the nature and composition of humus of these soils strongly depend on climate.
