Abstract

Transmission factor was calculated from effective self-diffusion coefficient of chloride ions in an alluvial sandy clay loam soil and diffusivity of chloride ions in bulk water. It increased from 4.89 × 10−2 to 10.39 × 10−2 as the bulk-density of soil increased from 1.3 to 1.5 g/cm3 and the value decreased to 8.97 × 10−2 at bulk-density 1.6 g/cm3. As the soil temperature decreased from 25 to 0°C, the transmission factor decreased 1260 fold. An attempt has also keen made to confirm the validity of the measurement of transmission factor at different tracer levels of 36Cl. It was found to be independent of the level of tracer used.
