Soil samples were collected from a Vertisol (Malmachanahalli series) and an Alfisol (Tyamagondalu series) profiles from the Bangalore region of Mysore plateau. The soil clays separated from these samples were converted into H-clay by appropriate resin treatments and studied by potentiometric and conductometric titration techniques.
The clays of Tyamagondalu profile are composed of mainly kaolinite with a small amount of mont- morillonite mineral. Malmachanahalli profile also seemed to be similar to that of Tyamagordalu profile, except for the last two horizons which contained montmorillonite in relatively larger amounts, leading to a strong acid feature in the clay titration curves. The dominant clay minerals were confirmed by differential thermal analysis.
