Abstract

The effect of submergence on the pH, Eh, EC and ion-activities of iron and zinc of rice soils of Kumaon and Garhwal regions of Uttar Pradesh was investigated. The pH of these slightly acidic soils registered an increase and approached neutrality after three weeks of submergence. The electrical conductivity increased 5 to 10 fold after three weeks of submergence. The ion activities of iron and zinc were observed to increase as also the activity ratio Fe+2/Zn+2. However, the increase in activity ratio was only about 20% as against up to 65% increase in the individual ions.
