A comprehensive study of response to applied potassium in twenty five representative soils of Tamil Nadu was carried out using rice as the test crop. It was observed that 0.1 N HNO3 extractable K was the best index of potassium availability which also registered very close relationships with many of the soil K parameters. This procedure has the added advantage of easy adaption, precision and rapidity.
