Abstract

Molecularly homogeneous fractions of fulvic acid extracted from a Mollisol were obtained by gel permeation chromatography. These were charaterized by elemental and functional group analysis and UV and IR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of fulvic acids ranged between 509 and 6918. The presence of carboxyl, phenolic hydroxyl, alcoholic hydroxyl, ketonic carbonyl and amine groups was observed. The IR spectra of metal complexes of the fulvic acids indicated that both electrovalent and coordinate covalent bonds are involved in complex formations.
