Most profitable yield of potato and rice could be obtained by the continuous application of potassium at the rate of 80 and 60 kg K/ha, respectively in a potato-rice sequence in the high rainfall area of Meghalaya in the north-eastern hills. There was little build up of exchangeable K in the soil. At lower rate of application, the fertilizer potassium was completely fixed whereas at higher rate, part of it was lost. The optimum dose to maintain the native soil K for obtaining the maximum yield of potato-rice sequence was found to be 140 kg K/ha.
