Short duration rice varieties, grown in non-traditional areas of Delhi region having alluvial soils of medium to low fertility, were found to differ in their capacity to extract native zinc, copper, iron and manganese from soil. These values (g per quintal of grain) ranged from 3.72 to 14.29 for zinc, 0.84 to 3.68 for copper, 28.6 to 298.8 for iron and 16.7 to 64.3 for manganese. Attempts have been made to classify these rice varieties in terms of their capacity to extract micronutrient cations from soil.
