Reconnaissance soil survey of salt-affected area located in the northern side of Nal Sarovar lake in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat state revealed that more than 23,000 ha of land is affected by salinity/alkalinity problem. Flat topography and aridity are the main factors responsible for formation of these salt affected soils. Impedance of natural drainage has resulted in water stagnant condition favouring the formation of Aquic Natrargids which occupy little more than two-third of the total salt-affected area. The runoff from these sailne tracts and other soils occurring within the catchment drains into the Nal Sarovar lake making it brackish.
