Abstract

Thirty profiles representing the major rivers and interfluvial river plains in Haryana state have been examined to understand the origin of hard calcium carbonate nodules in these soils. An attempt has also been made to study the drainage, tectonics and catchment area characteristics of these rivers and the possible source of the nodules. Though evidence is not absolute, it is inferred, based on the above studies and the chemical and micromorphological characteristics of the hard nodules, that these were brought down by the rivers along with alluvium and then got deposited in the plain during aggradation process. These hard nodules are, therefore, thought to be not secondary in origin.
