Abstract

Chromusterts are the dominant soils of alluvial plain and occupy nearly 60% of the total area in a case study carried out in Nagpur district (Maharashtra). Ustifluvents occurring in the recently dissected plains are the next dominant ones extending to 24% of the tract. Ustorthents present in pediments and Ustochrepts in recent alluvial plain cover less than 10% of the area. Physiography and climate have played an important role in the formation and development of the soils. High shrink-swell potential, firm consistence and moderate to severe erosion are some of the problems in the study area.
