Fifteen soil profiles -were studied for the pattern of zinc distribution in relation to depth and important soil characteristics, in different agro-climatic zones of the corth-western Himalayan region. The distribution of zinc in the profiles was found to be heterogeneous and did not bear any direct relationship either with the contiguity of the area or the climate. The total zinc did not have significant correlation with individual soil properties. Multiple regression analysis showed that the DTPA-extractable zinc was influenced by pH, organic carbon and calcium carbonate content of the soils.
