Abstract

Seasonal variations in enzymatic activities in two surface layers (0–7.5 cm and 7.5–15 cm) were studied in a cultivated, pond and virgin soils. Invertase activity was highest in cultivated soils than in pond and virgin ones. Soil layer at 0–7.5 cm exhibited greater activity than the other one and rainy season was more favourable than summer and winter seasons. Amylase activity was greater in virgin and pond soils and a decrease in it was observed in second layer (7.5–15 cm). Phosphatase activity was maximum in virgin soil followed by pond, upland and transitional cultivated soils. This activity was significantly higher in 7.5–15 cm layer in rainy season.
