Land evaluation at project level has been attempted in this study using the Automated Land Evaluation System (ALES), a computer aided program which evaluates lands according to Food and Agriculture Organisation methodology. A ‘knowledgebase’ describing four proposed land uses in terms of both physical requirements and economic inputsanda ‘database’ describing the characteristics of landunits of Singhik sub-watershed were fed into the ALES framework to infer the economic suitability classes of the landunits. The suitability classes were linked to the ‘everity levels’ of the land qualities. Study showedthat the same mapping unit mayormaynot have same suitability for different land utilization types.
