A field experiment was conducted with Nandi setaria grass at four levels of manure and three levels of nitrogen on an Inceptisol of Sikkim. After three years of application of manure and nitrogen, manure increased the pH, organic carbon, available P, CEC, exchangeable Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ of the soil and decreased the amount of exchangeable Al3+ exponentially. Nitrogen application tended to decrease pH, available P, exchangeable Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ of the soils and increase exchangeable Al3+. The lowering of pH and CEC were counteracted by manure.
