Morphology and characteristics of four Entisols and Inceptisols two from cultivated and two from uncultivated are as representing part of the north - western Himalayas are described. The soils did not exhibit much difference in their characteristics and profile development. Marked similarities in mineralogy of sand. silt and clay fractions suggest that mineral weathering has been minimal. Parent material and topography appear to have dominant influence in the genesis of these soils.
