Abstract

Typical six soil profiles selected from dominant soil series occurring in different landforms, viz. alluvial fan, piedmont, recent flood plain, channel bar, flood channel and terrace in the Lohit river plain of Arunachal Pradesh were studied for their characterization, classification and suitability evaluation for some agricultural corps. The soils are stratified, coarse textured, slightly acidic to neutral with high organic carbon content. Despite low cation exchange capacity, all the soils have high per cent base saturation. The terrace and piedmont soils exhibit A-B-C horizons and are classified as Inceptisols; while soils of other landforms lack in B horizon and, therefore, key out as Entisols. The soils are further classified into subgroup level, and their productivity and suitability for agricultural crops were evaluated.
