In a laboratory experiment, the effect of soil water on pattern of release of NH4-N and NO3-N during decomposition of added greenmanure residue was studied. The NH4-N accumulation increased significantly with decrease in soil water but the release of NO3-N was reverse. The rate of NO3-N reiease was 14 times less in case of 0.9 MPa soil water level as compared to 0.01 MPa level. The total mineral-N production and rate of mineral-N accumulation were also significantly lowered with decrease in soil water level.
