Abstract

Thirtyfour pedons of coastal soils representing an area of 15,000 ha of Sundarbans, West Bengal were categorised on the basis of pH variations. Forty per cent of the study area falls in pH range 4–6; 40 per cent in pH range 6–7.5 and the rest 20 per cent in pH range > 7.5. A representative pedon under each pH category was characterized for morphological, physical and chemical properties and classified as per Soil Taxonomy.
