Abstract

A mathematical model for predicting salinization-desalinization of soils has been developed. The calibration and test of the model have been carried out for a medium textured soil. The correlation coefficients between the observed and the predictedfour soil depths viz. 45, 60, 75 and 90 cm and for a period of five years (1987–92) were close to 0.84. Considering the long period for which predictions were made and the high correlation coefficients, the model appears to be a good and realistic tool for predicting soil salinization-desalinization. Application potential of the proposed model in several field problems related to management of saline water irrigated soils and use of saline waters for crop production was also explored.
