Abstract

Geographical Information System (GIS), a tool for input, storage, analysis and display of spatial data has been used to prepare a digital soil map of Kerala. Soil and land characteristics are organized as relational tables using general purpose data base management software. Data created include digital soil map, relational tables for site characteristics, morphology and relevant properties of the soils. A subset of the data base is presented with outputs like basic soil map, various thematic maps generated through reclassification and land evaluation for some specified uses. Land use requirements and climatic data are used for land evaluation. Procedures for data input, storage and processing are described.
