Abstract

Numerical classification of twenty-five representative soils from sub-humid (Kinnaur district) and semi-arid (Lahui ans Spiti district) regions of Himachal Pradesh was done using the method suggested by Arkley. The taxonomic structure worked out from the Euclidean distance coefficients was presented using the cluster analysis technique of unweighted pair group method

using arithmetic averages (UPGMA). The grouping of soils of this mountainous transect made on the basis of numerical classification was in conformity with their classification in accordance with Soil Taxonomy of the USDA.
