Abstract

Field experiment was conducted to study the effect of various nitrogen management practices including greenmanure (Sesbania aculeata) and urea for yield and nitrogen use efficiency by rice grown under shallow water in the wet seasons of 1988 and 1989 on a Fluventic Haplaquept at Cuttack. Application of 80 kg N ha−1 through greenmanure a week before transplanting rice or substituting basal dose of 50 per cent N through greenmanuring plus 50 per cent through prilled urea gave the highest yield, maintained higher available NH4+-N in soil, and decreased losses of N through leaching and volatilization.
