Abstract

Red sandy dunal soil (Theri-soil) of Chidambaranar district of Tamil Nadu was surveyed and four soil series, viz. Mettutheri, Vandaltheri, Kattitheri and Valarmanntheri were identified. Four typifying pedons representing the above series were evaluated. Potentials and constraints were assessed and interpreted for better land use planning. Different interpretative systems, viz. land capability classification, soil and land irrigability classification, productivity ratings, ratings based on Storie Index and fertility capability classification indicated that these are not suitable for agriculture but can easily be brought to use through appropriate soil management technologies and conservation.
