Abstract

Reconnaissance soil survey was carried out in the Sagar Island of the Sundarbans delta, West Bengal using Survey of India topo sheets (1:50,000 scale) to identify, characterize and classify main soil groups of the island. These soils were grouped under two classes and representative pedon from each class was characterized for morphological, physical and chemical properties. The soils were classified as per Soil Taxonomy at family level as fine loamy, mixed, hyperthermic, Aerie Endoaquepts and fine, mixed, hyperthermic, Typic Endoaquepts.
