Characteristics of ten dominant soil series from major rice growing areas of upper Assam were studied for their suitability for rice cultivation. Soils are deep, moderately well drained to poorly drained, grayish in colour with varying degree of redoximorphic features. These are moderately acidic, low to medium in CEC, high in organic carbon with variable texture. Soil suitability evaluation for rice revealed that soils have good land index and are suitable to moderately suitable except Puranimati, Akahugaon and Dohotia series having lowest land rating index due to soil limitations.
