Representative soil profiles from Majalgaon canal command area were studied for the physical and chemical properties having relevance to irrigability. The soils are mostly Vertisols with high clay content, available water capacity 0.21 to 0.27 m mol, infiltration rate 5.0 to 10.0 x 10−6 m s−1 and slow to moderately slow drainability. These soils are neutral to alkaline in reaction, calcareous in nature, with low to medium fertility status of available N, P and K, high cation exchange capacity, dominated by exchangeable Ca followed by Mg, sufficient in. OTPA extractable Fe, Mo, Cu and marginal to sufficient in available Zn content. The data are discussed with regard to management of these soils for irrigated agriculture.
