Abstract

A laboratory experiment analysing the effect of soil pH on N mineralization was carried out in soils collected from regrowing forest stands of three different ages at higher altitudes of Meghalaya. Generally, ammonium concentration decreased with increasing soil pH, while nitrate concentration increased. Ammonification: nitrification ratio in the soil was 0.58, 0.72 and 2.97 in 7-, 13- and 16-year-old-forest. The net N mineralization showed a weak positive relationship with soil pH.
