Dynamics of Phosphorus in Soils

Dr. Narendra Kumar Tomar, Professor, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, was born on 1st May 1942. He received his B.Sc. (Ag.) degree from Agra University in 1962 and was awarded M.Sc. (Ag.) of Agra University in 1964 and Ph.D. of Haryana Agric. University, Hisar in 1981. He joined the then Haryana Agricultural University as Assistant Extension Specialist (Soil Science) in 1965 and was involved in research work on nutrient management of fruit trees and field crops. As Assistant Soil Chemist in the All India Coordinated Agronomic Research Project from 1970 to 1981 he studied fertilizer management in different crops and cropping systems. He was later elevated to the post of Professor. He has guided two M.Sc. and eight Ph.D. students. He has a brilliant academic record and won several awards and honours. He has authored 145 research papers. Dr. Tomar is a member of several scientific societies.

Dr. Tomar has varied professional experiences in teaching, research and administration for over 35 years. As an active scientist he has made significant contribution to basic and applied researches in different areas of soil science. Behaviour of phosphate in soil-plant system and chemistry of soil organic matter and its role in phosphate use efficiency and plant nutrition are the specific areas where he has done commendable work. In addition, he carried out extensive studies on the characterization, distribution, transformation, sorption, desorption, rate of phosphate fixation and rate of hydrolysis of pyro- and polyphosphate and their products in relation to properties of soils of different agroclimatic zones of India.
