Abstract

This paper aims to study land characteristics of a few selected soil series of Nagpur district, Maharashtra and estimate their minimal necessary membership function (MF) values for supporting cultivation of cotton and soybean in these soil series. The study has been carried out using the theory of fuzzy sets wherein different values of MFs have been calculated for various land characteristics. The intersection of the MF values for a particular soil characteristic for the given set of soil series yielded the minimal necessary MF values for that soil characteristic to support cotton and soybean cultivation in the selected soil series. The results obtained point at the vast potential of fuzzy analysis and its possible application to land evaluation.
