<p><bold>May 14, 1927-February 27, 2003</bold>, <bold>Professor Brijnandan Prasad Ghildyal</bold> (President of the Indian Society of Agro-Physics; Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences), passed away on February 27, 2003. Born on May 14, 1927 he did his B.Sc. (Ag.) in 1945, M.Sc. (Ag.) in 1947 and D. Phil. in 1950. He did his post-doctoral work in soil physics, irrigation and drainage at the University of Illinois, U.S. Salinity Laboratory, Colorado State University, Utah State University and US Department of Agriculture. He was Assistant Professor (1951) at the Agricultural College at Kanpur; Head of Soil Science, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (1956); Professor and Head, Department of Soil Science (1968) and Dean of College of Agriculture (1976) at the Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. He joined as Professor of Eminence of ICAR at Pantnagar in 1979 and headed the National Centre for Research on Soil-Water-Plant relations. He was elected as Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy in 1981. In 1982 he joined the Ford Foundation, New Delhi as programme officer in Agricultural Research. During his tenure as a Liaison Scientist, a number of collaborative activities between IRRI and ICAR and State Agricultural Universities of Indian National Agricultural Research System (NARS) were initiated and strengthened. The ICAR conferred on Prof. Ghildyal its most prestigious Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Prize in 1971 for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of the physical environment of rice plant. Textbook on ‘Soil Physics’ published in 1987 by him along with Dr. R.P. Tripathi has been acclaimed nationally and internationally. Prof. Ghildyal was the most amiable and inspiring teacher for whom teaching Soil Physics and guiding researchers in this field was a passion. He guided more than two dozen Ph.D. students and published over 150 original research papers in the journals of national and international repute. Soil Science community will always remember Prof. Ghildyal as one of the pioneer Soil Physicists. His demise is a great loss to the community of the Soil Scientists in India. The Members of the Indian Society of Soil Science deeply mourn and condole the death of Prof. Ghildyal.</p></sec></body></article></article></body></html>
