Abstract

Sustainability of rice-based cropping systems in uplands under rainfed ecosystem has enhanced by applying 10 t cattle manure ha−1 to direct seeded upland rice. Succeeding crops of green gram and field pea were also benefited. It is evident from the rice equivalent yield that the total production of rice–green gram was more than that observed in rice–field pea cropping system. Moreover, the rice equivalent yield (2.06–2.28 t ha−1) obtained by application of 10 t cattle manure ha −1 is comparatively less then that (1.07–1.99 t ha−1) recorded after application of 5 t cattle manure ha −1 in combination with NPK. An appreciable change in soil chemical properties with an enhancement in nutrient uptake was observed with the application of 10 t cattle manure ha−1.
